Copycat Shamrock Shake Recipe
There’s nothing like the feeling when you hit the drive through and see that one of your favorite, seasonal menu items is back. These Shamrock Shakes are on the top of that list for me, and for my kids too.
So why not make a Shamrock Shake right at home, whenever you want one? I’m all about instant gratification so copycat recipes like this one are golden. Spike this festive milkshake for the adults and leave it virgin for the kids. Everyone wins.
Ingredients You’ll Need
- Milk: We prefer using whole milk for the creamiest texture and flavor.
- Vanilla Ice Cream: Any brand you like.
- Mint Extract: For a hint of mint flavor.
- Green Food Coloring: To give the milkshake a green color, but is also optional.
- Whipped Cream: We like to add whipped cream to the top of our Shamrock Shake but it is also optional.
How To Make A Shamrock Shake
This Shamrock Shake recipe is really very simple. It’s basically adding the ingredients to a blender and blending until smooth. If you’re milkshake is too thick, add another splash of milk to loosen the consistency.
It does help if the ice cream is slightly softened and not rock hard straight out of the freezer. Just about 5 minutes on the counter is all you should need.
McDonald’s has been serving shamrock shakes since the 70’s and customers have been loving them ever since. These shakes are seasonal though, so you can only get them around St. Patrick’s Day.
Which is why we chose to make this copycat version at home, this way we can enjoy these McDonald’s treats whenever we want them. McDonald’s has their own shamrock shake syrup, but you can easily recreate that by using the mont extract and green food coloring.
The fun part about making a copycat recipe like this one at home is that you can switch up the ingredients any way you like. Change up the colors for different holidays or parties, or switch up the flavorings. You can even try having a milkshake bar with different color and flavors combinations!
Can You Add Alcohol To Shamrock Shakes?
For the adults, obviously, you can pour out the kids portions and then add some liquor to the blender. There’s tons of options as far as the booze goes, here are a few of our favorites.
- Whiskey/Bourbon (perfect for your St. Patrick’s Day party!)
- Rum, plain or flavored
- Vodka, plain or flavored
- Creme de Menthe (will also add the green color, so you won’t need food coloring)
