ingredients you’ll need
A photo of the primary ingredients you’ll need, minus the basics like salt and pepper. For a complete list of ingredients with amounts needed, head to the recipe card below.
After the photo we’ll talk about the ingredients, why they work in this recipe and also substitutions if applicable.

- Flank Steak: A 1 1/2 to 2 pound flank steak works best for most air fryers. Flank steaks tend to be thicker on one side and thinner on the other side. If your flank steak is very thick on one side, you can cut the steak in half before adding to your air fryer. Leave the thick end in to cook a few more minutes than the thinner end.
- Seasoning: We love using our all purpose seasoning, we always have some made and ready to use. You can also use any steak seasoning that you like or even your favorite marinade.

Step by step photos here with brief instructions for a visual aid. For complete, detailed instructions, head to the recipe card at the end of the post.

- Season the steak: Using a dry rub, season the steak generously on both side, rubbing in the seasonings so that they stick to the meat. Let the steak sit at room temperature for 20 minutes, this helps the steak cook quicker and more evenly.

- Place steak in air fryer: Add the seasoned steak to your air fryer. It’s ok if it doesn’t quite fit, as you see ours is a little too big. The steak will shrink as it cooks as you can see in the photo below.

- Cook: Air fry the steak for 7 minutes on each side for a medium temperature. 6 minutes on each side works well for medium rare and 5 minutes works well for rare. See the recipe card for more details.

tips for best results
Even though this air fryer flank steak is such an easy recipe, we do have some tips to ensure best results!
- Let the steak come to room temperature: If you cook a steak straight from the fridge, the muscle fibers contract more, which can lead to tougher, drier meat. Letting it rest helps the fibers relax, keeping the steak tender and flavorful.
- Season generously or marinade: if you’re using a dry rub or seasoning blend, make sure that you generously season the meat. The seasoning should cover the meat well. If you’re marinating instead, make sure the marinade has bright flavors like our teriyaki steak marinade or this Fiesta Steak marinade.
- Use a meat thermometer: Since steaks come in all shapes and sizes, and air fryers cook differently, use a steak thermometer to ensure the steak turns out the way you like it.
- Let the meat rest: After cooking the steak, cover it with foil and let it rest for 8-10 minutes before slicing.

Air Fryer Flank Steak
- Prep Time: 20 minutes
- Cook Time: 12 minutes
- Total Time: 32 minutes
- Yield: 6 servings 1x
Air Fryer Flank Steak turns out perfectly juicy and tender with a delicious crust in just minutes! A no-mess steak recipe that is ready to serve with minimal effort and just a couple of ingredients. Perfect for an easy weeknight dinner or a special date night in!
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 – 2 pound flank steak (closer to 2 pounds is ideal)
- 2 – 3 tablespoons All Purpose Seasoning (See post or note below for other options)
Instructions
- Season the flank steak generously on both side with the all purpose seasoning. If you’re marinating the steak instead, make sure to dry off the marinade with paper towels before cooking.
- Let the steak sit at room temperature for 20 minutes before cooking. This helps the steak cook more evenly, if you’re short on time 10 minutes will do.
- Preheat the air fryer to 400 degrees. Place the steak in the air fryer and cook for 7 minutes on each side for medium. 6 minutes on each side for medium rare and 5 minutes on each side for rare. The cooking time will depend on the shape of your flank steak, if you have a very thick end piece, you can trim the steak in half (before adding it to the air fryer) and cook that half for another 2-3 minutes.
- Remove the steak to a platter and cover with aluminum foil. Let the steak rest for 8-10 minutes, then slice against the grain and serve with juices.
Recipe Notes
Since all flank steaks are different shapes (some much thicker on one end) the cooking time can vary. If you’re steak is very thick on one end you can cut the steak in half before cooking and leave the thicker end of the meat in the air fryer a few minutes longer.
Let the steak rest for 8-10 minutes, covered with foil, after cooking. After slicing, pour the juices from the platter on the sliced steak.
If using a marinade, make sure to dry the steak off with a paper towel before cooking.
Reheating: You can heat the steak in the microwave but only just until heated through. Too long will overcook the steak and make it tough. If you want an all cooked through, charred finish, you can reheat the steak with some butter in a skillet.
