We Why Love This All Purpose Seasoning Recipe

You know how you go to the same spices over and over in the spice cabinet? We do, too and that’s when we decided that we needed to bottle it up in one jar. This All Purpose Seasoning has all of our favorite flavors, but it’s also extremely versatile. We use it on all kinds of proteins, all kind of vegetables and even seafood.

  • Saves Time: It’s so convenient having a spice blend ready to use when you’re cooking. Not having to measure out spices separately when you’re cooking is such a time saver!
  • Versatile: We use this seasoning blend on anything and everything. Scroll further down in the post for tons of ideas.
  • Save Money: If you buy your seasonings in bulk, making a spice blend like this one can save you money. It’s so much cheaper than buying pre-made spice blends at the store.
  • Easy To Make: Simple stir the spices together until fully blended and it’s ready to use.

Spices You’ll Need

Gather up a few spices and you’ll be ready to cook in just minutes. Again, it’s best to start with fresh spices or relatively new spices so that you get the most shelf life from your blend. Of course, if you’re making this to use in the near future you should absolutely go ahead and use up what you have!

seasonings in a bowl
  • Paprika: We use regular paprika but you can also use smoked paprika if you like the flavor of that.
  • Cumin: Cumin has a delicious smoky, earthy flavor to it which is why we stick with regular paprika.
  • Cayenne Pepper: Just a little bit of cayenne for spice, but it’s just enough. This isn’t a spicy seasoning blend, even though you can make it spicier if you’d like.
  • Black Pepper: Fresh ground black pepper is also a must if you ask us. Fresh ground has much more flavor than ground pepper that’s been sitting in a jar for a while already.
  • Brown Sugar: You can use light or dark, it adds a touch of sweetness to round out the bolder flavors.
  • Chili Powder: There’s all kinds of chili powder, from smoky to spicy, but to keep this an all purpose seasoning blend we’re using regular chili powder.
  • Garlic Powder: One of our favorite spices, we’re pretty much using garlic powder in all of our recipes.
  • Kosher Salt: Kosher salt is also a must for this recipe. Iodized salt will have way more of a salty flavor so we don’t like to use that. Sea salt will be too coarse for this mixture, as we want all of the spices to blend together smoothly.

Tips For Success

Although this seasoning blend is extremely easy to make, we do have a few tips for ensuring success.

  • Start With Fresh Spices: If you want this seasoning to taste it’s best, and last the longest start with fresh spices. Of course you can use up what you have in your cabinets, just check the dates to make sure they aren’t about ready to expire.
  • Taste For Your Tastes: After you get this seasoning blend together, dip a finger in it and give it a taste. Adjust to your liking if you want more spice or more garlicky flavor, for example.
  • Store Properly: Make sure that you store this seasoning in a mason jar or another air tight container to maintain the freshness.
  • Mix, Mix Mix: Use a fork or a whisk to make sure that you get all the spices blended together equally. The brown sugar will have to be broken down and worked into the mixture.

How Long Will This Seasoning Last?

The answer is it depends. Usually spices are good for a couple of years, so it’s a couple of years if you store it correctly and started with fresh spices. We use this seasoning so much, it’s never really a problem for us. In fact, we always double or triple this recipe when we make it!

Ways To Use

Like we’ve mentioned above, you can use this all purpose seasoning in so many different ways. For starters, we use it on our BBQ Ribs recipe and our Pulled Pork recipe – hands down, all the time. You can use it on lots of chicken recipes like these Pineapple Chicken Kabobs, too.

Give your vegetables an extra punch of flavor and season them before roasting! We also love seasoning our french fries with this blend before baking, as well as this Roasted Cauliflower. Once you get a feel for the flavor, you’ll start to use it in place of separate spices when you’re cooking.
