  • Make Ahead: You can make everything in this recipe ahead of time and just warm the chicken and pita bread right before serving.

How To Make

Step by step photos here with brief instructions for a visual aid. For complete, detailed instructions, head to the recipe card at the end of the post.

  • Marinate the chicken: We use our delicious Greek Chicken Marinade for the most juicy chicken ever. After the chicken has marinated, thread onto skewers and grill the chicken or bake in the oven. (see note in recipe card)
  • Gather toppings and sauce: Gather your toppings; we like sliced onion, shredded lettuce and tomatoes and of course the tzatziki sauce. You can certainly make your own, or grab a bottle from the store.

How To Serve

You can wrap the pita bread in aluminum foil and have it warming in the oven while you grill the chicken. Or you can warm the pita right on the grill!

Add a bed of lettuce to a warm pita bread and top with a spoonful or two of tzatziki sauce. Add sliced tomatoes and thinly sliced red onion. Top with the marinated chicken and serve.

What Is Tzatziki Sauce?

Tzatziki sauce is a sauce made from yogurt (typically Greek yogurt) fresh lemon juice, garlic, cucumbers and fresh herbs. Not only is tzatziki sauce delicious on this Chicken Souvlaki recipe but it’s great for topping sandwiches or using as a dipping sauce for fresh vegetables.

There are really good versions that you can find right at the grocery store! Or you can make your own, we like this recipe from Natasha’s Kitchen.

Can You Make The Chicken in the Oven?

Yes, if a grill isn’t an option, you can make the chicken in the oven or even in a skillet. For these options, skip the skewers and just add the marinated chicken to a oven safe baking dish, or right to a skillet.

Scale

Ingredients

For Serving:

  • 6 Pita Breads
  • 2 large tomatoes, sliced
  • 1 red onions, sliced
  • 3 cups shredded Romaine or Iceberg Lettuce
  • Tzatziki Sauce

Instructions

  1. Start by cutting the chicken into large cubes. Add to a dish or a resealable bag and toss with the Greek Chicken Marinade. Marinate the chicken for 4-6 hours.
  2. If using wooden skewers, soak them in water for at least 30 minutes before grilling. After the chicken has marinated, remove the chicken from the marinade and thread onto the skewers. Grill over medium heat for 4-5 minutes on each side until the chicken is cooked through. If you don’t have a grill available, you can cook the chicken in a skillet or in the oven. (see note)
  3. While the chicken is cooking, wrap the pita bread in aluminum foil and place it in the oven at 325 degrees or you can add the foil packet right onto the grill during the last few minutes of cooking.
  4. To assemble, place a bed of shredded lettuce on a warm pita bread and top with a spoonful or two of tzatziki sauce. Add a few pieces of the chicken along with sliced tomatoes and sliced red onion.

Recipe Notes

To use the oven or a skillet: Ski the skewers and just add the chicken right to a skillet with some olive oil and cook until no pink remains. If using the oven, spray a baking dish with non-stick cooking spray and bake at 350 for 10 minutes until no pink remains.
