Why We Love This Cheeseburger Bowl

These bowls taste just like biting into a juicy cheeseburger with all the toppings. But besides how good it tastes, this cheeseburger bowl is a go to recipe of our for so many more reasons!

  • High Protein Meal: If you’re looking to hit your protein, this bowl is a great way to do it. Lots of lean ground beef and cheese crank up the protein count.
  • Easy To Make: All you need is one skillet for cooking the ground beef and onions, and you can melt the cheese right on top.
  • Customizable: Everyone can customize their own cheeseburger bowls, from just beef and cheese to all the toppings!
  • Great For Meal Prepping: Make the ground beef and cheese portion of this recipe and then have your lettuce and toppings separate and ready to go.

How To Make

We’ve got a couple of pictures here to show you how to do it, but this cheeseburger bowl is so easy to make, it comes together in just minutes.

  • Make the ground beef: Add oil to a skillet and cook diced onions for 3-4 minutes until softened. Add ground beef, breaking up into crumbles, and cook until no pink remains. Drain any grease from the skillet and add the seasonings. Place slices of American cheese on top of the beef and cover until melted.

  • Make the Sauce and Assemble: Stir together mayonnaise, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper and pickle relish in a small bowl. Add torn iceberg lettuce to bowls, top with a portion of the ground beef and cheese and then drizzle with the sauce.

Topping Ideas

We like adding pickle relish (or you can use sliced pickles) and diced onions to top our bowls, but other toppings could include:

Variations

You can use any type of lettuce you like for this cheeseburger bowl. You want something sturdy to hold up to the warm ground beef and cheese like iceberg, Romaine or even cabbage. Leaf lettuce or butter lettuce are also good choices, and make for nice presentations. Also try tossing in some arugula or mixed greens for a different texture.

Instead of ground beef you can also use ground turkey or ground chicken. We like using a lean ground beef for the best flavor and the highest protein, but we’ve made this with both ground chicken and ground turkey and it’s delicious!

Scale

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 cup diced onion
  • 1 tablespoon minced garlic
  • 1 1/2 pounds lean ground beef
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon yellow mustard
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • Fresh ground black pepper to taste
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • 5 slices yellow American cheese
  • 1 head iceberg lettuce, cleaned and torn into pieces

For the Sauce:

  • 1 1/2 cups mayonnaise
  • 1/3 cup ketchup
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
  • Fresh ground black pepper to taste
  • 1 tablespoon pickle relish

Instructions

  1. Add the ingredients for the sauce to a small bowl, whisk to combine and set aside.
  2. Add the oil to a large skillet over medium heat. Add the onions and cook for 3-4 minutes until softened. Add the ground beef, breaking up into crumbles as it cooks. Cook the beef until no pink remains and then drain any grease from the skillet.
  3. Stir in the Worcestershire sauce, mustard, salt, pepper, garlic powder and paprika. Place the cheese slices on top of the ground beef to cover most of the surface of the meat. Cover with a lid (or you can use aluminum foil) for 1 minute to let the cheese melt.
  4. Divide the lettuce between 4 large, shallow bowls. Using a spatula, spoon the beef and cheese on top of the lettuce, dividing between the 4 bowls.
  5. Drizzle the sauce on top or serve on the side. Add desired toppings and serve.
