Ingredients For Philly Cheesesteak Fried Rice

Fried rice recipes are really good recipes for cleaning out the refrigerator. You can easily swap out vegetables in this recipe or use different proteins, or swap out the cheese for a different flavor.

  • White Rice: Preferably rice that has been cooked and cooled so the grains separate, but if you need to cook it right away, spread it out on a sheet pan and let it cool for 15 minutes before using.
  • Ground Beef: You can also swap out ground pork, chicken or turkey but we prefer the flavor of ground beef.
  • Bell Peppers: Any color you like.
  • Eggs: Four large eggs is a good ratio, if you want to up the protein you can add a couple more.
  • Soy Sauce: We prefer a low sodium so that we can control the flavor.
  • Sesame Oil: Toasted sesame oil will give the best flavor, but regular sesame oil works, too.
  • Provolone or Mozzarella Cheese: Mozzarella cheese is a better melting cheese but has a more mild flavor. You can also use a combination of both, or even swap out cheddar or American cheese.

How To Make

All you need is about 20 minutes from start to finish to get this cheesy fried rice on the table. Prep the peppers and onions while the rice is cooking so you have it ready to go. If you’re starting with leftover rice then dinner will be on the table in minutes!

Tips For Success

There are a few tips for making really delicious tasting fried rice at home. Even thought this Philly Cheesesteak Fried Rice is easy to make, we do have some tips for best results!

  • Make the rice ahead of time: If you can, cook the rice ahead of time and let it cool in the refrigerator. This way the grains will separate and not turn mushy as you make the fried rice. If you don’t have time to make the rice ahead of time, spread it out on a baking sheet and let it cool for 15 minutes before making the fried rice.
  • Drain the grease: Make sure to drain any grease from the skillet after cooking the ground beef. If you don’t do this step, the rice will turn out mushy and yep – greasy.
  • Grate your own cheese: As with many other recipes, grating your own cheese will give you much better results than pre-shredded cheese.
