Why Homemade Fajita Seasoning Is BEST!

Sure you can grab a jar of fajita seasoning at the store, but taking a few minutes to make it homemade makes all the difference! And don’t stop at just fajitas, we’re using this fajita seasoning on anything and everything. Sprinkle on chicken, use in your favorite soups, even stir into sour cream for a fajita flavored dip.

  • Easy To Make: All you need is about 2 minutes and you’ll have a cup of the most delicious tasting seasoning ever. Once everything is in a bowl just stir, use and store.
  • Use In Fajitas and More! Like we mentioned, of course use this seasoning in all your fajita recipes, but don’t stop there. It’s delicious on oven roasted potatoes, used in rice recipes, on grilled meats or in dips.
  • Keeps Forever: Well, maybe not forever…but if stored properly you can keep this homemade seasoning in your pantry for at least a couple of years.

Ingredients You’ll Need

One of the tips we have for making this homemade seasoning is to start with fresh spices. If you start with fresh spices you can keep this seasoning in your pantry for 2-3 years. That’s a lot of fajitas!!!

ingredients for making fajita seasoning in a wood bowl
  • Paprika: We use regular paprika in this recipe but you can also use smoked paprika. We think there’s enough smoky flavor from the ground cumin, but it’s up to your taste.
  • Dried Oregano: Regular dried oregano, but you can also use Mexican oregano too.
  • Cumin: Cumin is what gives this seasoning that Tex-Mex feel. It’s earthy, smoky flavor can’t be replicated.
  • Garlic Powder: Adds a punch of garlic flavor.
  • Onion Powder: Onion powder tends to be sweeter than garlic powder, they both work well together.
  • Chili Powder: Regular chili powder for our recipe, but you can also swap out a spicier chili powder if you like.
  • Cayenne Pepper: For a bit of spice, you can add a little more or less depending on your taste. The amount we have here just adds a mild heat.
  • Kosher Salt: Definitely use kosher salt for this recipe, iodized salt in this amount will result in a very salty flavor.
  • Ground Black Pepper: Black pepper adds a different, more background heat than cayenne.

How To Store

Once your fajita seasoning is mixed together, store in an air tight container or a mason jar for the best shelf life. Store spices in a cool, dark area like a cabinet that’s not right next to the stove or a hot light.

Another great tip here that might seem like a no-brainer is to remember to clearly label your seasoning. I know it might seem crazy – that you’d actually forget what this big jar of seasoning is but I’m telling you, it’s not. It’s happened to me more times than I care to admit!

More Ways To Use

Not just for fajitas! Although we love using this recipe to make chicken or steak fajitas, we use it in so many different recipes and meals. Take our slow cooker taco chicken (shown below) for instance. The recipe has a few spices listed separately, which are delicious and we follow most of the time.

But if you’ve got this fajita seasoning all set to go, and you’re making a recipe with the same kind of flavors – just grab it and use it. It’s going to be delicious.

Stir it into sour cream with a squeeze of lime for a sauce for tacos or a just a dip for tortilla chips. Stir into mayonnaise (also with a squeeze of lime) and to use in chicken wraps with roasted peppers.
