Why We LOVE Texas Trash Dip

  • Easy To Make: Texas Trash Dip only takes about 5 minutes to put together. You can make it ahead of time and bake it right before serving.
  • Perfect Party Appetizer: Just plop the dish down, grab a bag of chips and dig in. Nothing to serve or dish out to anyone, nothing to assemble. Gather round and enjoy.
  • Addicting Flavor: Creamy refried beans, cheese and chiles all come together to make the most addicting – can’t get enough of this dip. There won’t be a drop left.

Ingredients You’ll Need

A photo of the primary ingredients you’ll need, minus the basics like salt and pepper. For a complete list of ingredients with amounts needed, head to the recipe card at the end of the post.

After the photo we’ll talk about a few of the noteworthy ingredients, why they work in this recipe and also substitutions if applicable.

ingredients for making texas trash dip
  • Refried Beans: Regular refried beans, fat free refried beans, even spicy or a flavored version. We stick with regular but you can use whatever you like.
  • Cream Cheese: Again, full fat works best but you can use a light cream cheese, although fat free is not recommended for it’s texture after baking.
  • Sour Cream: Full fat, regular sour cream if our preference, but you could substitute light cream cheese as well. Again, fat free isn’t recommended.
  • Mexican Blend Cheese: Cheddar cheese also works fine, or Monterey Jack combined with pepper jack would be delicious.
  • Taco Seasoning: Grab a 1 ounce packet or use our All Purpose Seasoning or our Fajita Seasoning if you have that made.
  • Diced Green Chiles: These chiles are very mild, they really add more of a “tang” than a spiciness. If you like more heat you can diced up a jalapeño pepper, too.
  • Tortilla Chips: For dipping! Any tortilla chip you like is fine, as long as it’s sturdy enough to hold up to this cheesy bean dip.

Variations

Switch up this bean dip to the flavors you like! Use spicy refried beans if you want to turn the heat up. Or like we mentioned before, a chopped jalapeño in with the green chiles.

One thing we do differently for our Texas Trash Dip recipe is we add salsa to the cream cheese layer. I love the slight bit of tomato flavor that it adds, along with another mild layer of heat.

Try adding sliced black olives, chopped cilantro or even whole black beans or pinto beans. Top this dip of with a few crumbles of cotija cheese for an authentic feel!

How To Serve

We like to serve Texas Trash Dip simply with tortilla chips, but you can use other dippers, too! Pretzel chips or pita chips, even a sturdy potato chip. Keep in mind that this is a warm bean dip with a cheesy layer on top so make sure that your guests are ready to dig in!

A great way to keep dips like this warm is to use a Food Warming Mat. Just place the dish on top and it’ll stay gooey and cheesy for hours!
