The Best Steak Marinade Recipe

There are so many steak marinades that you can choose from, and I do suggest that you try as many as you can.\, starting with Dan’s Famous Whiskey Steak.

We’ve tried a lot obviously, just from researching recipes to family favorites like this French Dressing Steak. As much fun as it is trying new recipes though we do have our favorites.

An interesting thing about this whiskey marinade is that it not only adds flavor to the steak but it tenderizes the meat as well. Ketchup has a natural acidity that breaks down the meat and makes it super tender, so I add it to a lot of my marinade recipes.

I’ve seen different versions of this whiskey marinade recipe with similar ingredients but I have to say, I totally perfected this recipe! Using simple, but super flavorful ingredients that everyone should have around at all times.

All you need to do is whisk the ingredients together for the marinade and get yourself a nice, big flank steak. Pour the marinade over the steak in a glass dish or a resealable bag and let it sit. I really like to give this whiskey steak a soak overnight, but at least get this ready first thing in the morning on the day you want to grill it.

24 hours is best, you’ll be happy you waited.

Before your steak goes on the grill, wipe off most of the excess marinade but don’t wipe it off completely…you want some of the marinade still on your steak so that it caramelizes on the grill and sticks to your meat.

Tips For The Best Grilled Steak

One thing you need to remember is that once you get your steak on the grill – leave it alone. Don’t keep moving it around or the meat won’t sear on the outside, and in this case the marinade won’t caramelize and you’ll end up with a mess.

You also have to make sure that your grill is at the right temperature, in this case a medium high heat. Not to low, not too high.

After your steak is cooked to your liking, remove the steak from the grill, cover it with foil and let it rest for a good 5-10 minutes before slicing. See the temperatures below for cooking times!

What Temperature Do You Take The Steak Off The Grill?

These temperatures are for when you take the meat off the grill, then it will rise a few more degrees during the resting period.

  • Rare: 130°F – 135°F
  • Medium Rare: 140°F – 145°F
  • Medium: 155°F – 160°F
  • Well Done: 165°F – 170°F

Even if you aren’t a whiskey drinker, grab and airplane bottle or two and throw it in here. You don’t have to drink it straight but I promise you’re going to love the flavor the whiskey adds to this steak marinade.

Remember also that the whiskey helps to tenderize the beef so it’s not something you want to leave out of this marinade recipe. This is one of those steak recipes that you’re going to start eating right off the grill, like immediately. But do try and wait to let it rest first!

That’s why I always choose to be the griller and slicer, I get first dibs on the steak!
