Why We Love This Crab Salad Appetizer Recipe

So of course you don’t have to wait for the holidays to make these Crab Salad Appetizers, but they sure are a good one for the holidays! Easy, make ahead appetizer recipes are always good to have on hand for Christmas, New Year’s Eve or any time you need to make a quick recipe that still looks this amazing.

We make these easy snacks for game days or just a happy hour hang. Everyone loves them, and they won’t weigh you down for the rest of the evening!

But don’t stop there – we also love having these on hand for a quick lunch or an afternoon snack. Just have the crab salad prepared and then assemble right before eating.

How To Make

All you need to do is mix together the crab salad ingredients, all in one bowl, then top sliced cucumbers and garnish. That’s it. You can use the garnish ideas we have here or get creative and add your own toppings.

Do I Have To Use Lump Crab Meat For This Crab Salad Recipe?

Absolutely not. But you can if you really want to!

Lump crab meat will never be turned away at my house, but you really don’t have to spend the extra money for this crab salad recipe. First of all, you’ll be breaking a lot of the crab down when you’re mixing up the salad. Yes, you can gently fold the ingredients together but some of the lump crab meat will inevitably fall apart.

The other reason I don’t use lump crab meat for this recipe is that claw meat actually stays on the cucumber slice better! We actually tried using lump crab meat the first time we made this appetizer recipe and the “lumps” didn’t stay as well on the cucumber slices.

SO if there’s ever a reason to save a buck on an appetizer recipe, this is the time!

What Kind Of Peppers Are Used In This Crab Appetizer?

Aren’t these the cutest peppers???

We found them at one of our local grocery stores for the first time at their antipasto bar but now we are seeing them everywhere. These peppers are most commonly called Sweety Drops, so if you can find them, grab a bunch.

Sweety Drop peppers aren’t spicy but they have a slight kick to them. They are more on the sweet side but with a sharp kick from the brine that they are in. Honestly, these peppers are perfect on so  many things, we just love them!

But if you can’t find these Sweety Drop Peppers, here are some other ideas!

  • Sliced Olives (Green or Black)
  • Chopped Sun Dried Tomatoes
  • Banana Pepper Rings
  • Sliced Dill Pickles or Cornichons
  • Pickled Jalapeño Peppers
  • Sliced Grape Tomatoes

Can I Make This Appetizer Recipe Ahead Of Time?

You can, although I would recommend assembling them right before serving. So go ahead and slice the cucumbers and make the crab salad and let them hang out in the refrigerator until you’re ready. Then right before your guests arrive you can assemble and serve!
