Ingredients You Need
Like we said, just a few simple, pantry ingredients is all you need to get started with this slow cooker chicken recipe. For the complete list of ingredients with the amounts needed head to the recipe card at the end of the post.

- Chicken breasts: About two pounds of chicken breasts. You can also use boneless, skinless chicken thighs if you like.
- Mushrooms: Button mushrooms work best, white or brown. We like to keep the pieces a little bigger so they keep their texture. Some larger mushrooms we’ll cut in quarters and the smaller mushrooms we’ll just cut in half.
- Cream of mushroom soup: We like the mushroom flavor here, but you can also use cream of chicken soup.
- Seasonings: Poultry seasoning amps up the chicken flavor, dried oregano gives another level of earthy flavor. You can also use Italian seasoning if you like. We sprinkle in a bit of salt, but not much since the other ingredients have a high sodium content.
- Powdered chicken gravy: This is sold in packets that are readily available at most grocery stores.
- Dry onion soup mix: Just one packet, adds a delicious depth of oniony flavor.

How To Serve Slow Cooker Chicken and Gravy
We like to serve this chicken and mushrooms dish over egg noodles or rice with extra gravy spooned on top. Mashed potatoes are also delicious, as are crispy shoestring french fries.
Since this dinner recipe already has mushrooms, we think it’s a pretty complete meal. However, if you’d like to add another side if vegetables that’s always welcome. A Caesar salad would be great, or a sweet and salty side of peas with bacon.

Tips For the Best Chicken Stroganoff
Follow the recipe card below for best results, but also refer to our post for additional helpful tips!
- Try chicken thighs: Instead of chicken breasts (which are perfectly delicious in this slow cooker recipe) you can also use chicken thighs for a little more flavor.
- Don’t overcook: Many people often think of slow cooker recipes that cook all day long, this one is not that recipe. Depending on the size of the chicken breasts that you start with, the chicken should be tender in about four hours. A little extra time for chicken thighs might be necessary.
- Add salt at the end: You don’t have to add the salt to the chicken before cooking. If you’re senstivie to sodium, add it at the end since a few of the ingredients in this recipe have a high sodium content. You might not need any salt at all.
