Bananas Foster

Enjoy this classic Bananas Foster dessert at home! Fresh, ripe bananas caramelized in a buttery brown sugar sauce and spiked with a hint of dark rum. We like to serve it over a scoop of homemade vanilla ice cream for perfect balance of creaminess and flavor.

A Classic Dessert Recipe For Entertaining Or Date Night At Home

The first time I ever had it was at an Italian restaurant near my home. They come over table side to prepare it, flames and all. Then they pour the sauce all over the cold vanilla ice cream and serve it up to you. The bananas are soft and caramelized and the sauce is rich with cream and filled with booze…lots of booze. I mean, what could be better?

We’ve been making Bananas Foster at home for a long time now, it’s a lot easier than it seems and it’s definitely a great way to use up any bananas you’ve got hanging around…move over boozy banana bread. We’re making Bananas Foster here.

How Do You Make Bananas Foster?

All you have to do is melt a stick of butter in a large skillet with about a cup of brown sugar. After the brown sugar melts in the butter, add the sliced bananas and pour in a half a cup of cream.

Give it a stir, carefully, you don’t want melted sugar splattering anywhere on you. Not fun.

Now comes the fun part – pour in banana liquor and dark rum…then light it on fire! Just use one of those electric stick lighters you use for your grill, and don’t get too close, it’s going to flame up!

Turn the lights off if you’re doing this at night…fun effect for the kids.

And yes, we do let out kids eat this dessert. By the time the flame dies out most of the alcohol gets burned off and just the flavor is left.

You can’t really see how the whole pan is covered in a big flame, but if you look at the top left corner of the picture you can see the top of flame…it’s there, burning out the booze.

Scoop some vanilla ice cream into a bowl and pour the sauce all over the top. Add a whole lot of those caramelized bananas too and you’ve got a dessert worth of a restaurant meal, but you did it all at home.

The best part about this Bananas Foster dessert is when you’re at the bottom and all the sauce has mixed together with the melted ice cream. That my friends is an amazing, boozy bite right there.
