You see this is why I love all the seasons. It basically revolves around food.

Now that we’re getting into the colder weather we can start breaking out more slow cooker recipes, more comfort food recipes, more recipes that make your whole house smell so amazing and you just can’t wait for dinner to get here.

This Turkey Leg Split Pea Soup is all of the above – fits every category – and couldn’t be easier to make. You can also try our Stove Top Split Pea Soup Recipe, which uses leftover ham instead of a turkey leg!

Instead of using ham in this split pea soup recipe, we used a smoked turkey leg that (mind blown) we found in the regular grocery store. BUT now we love this soup recipe so much that it haas become a favorite leftover turkey recipe after Thanksgiving.

Just try and save those turkey legs from dinner…it becomes aa game at our house because our boys really love the legs! Then I go to other houses for Thanksgiving and no one wants the legs at all! That’s when we steal them and throw them in a plastic container to take home.

How to Make Turkey Leg Split Pea Soup

All you need to do is get the turkey legs into a slow cooker with water, carrots, celery, onions and a bag of split peas. Set the slow cooker on low for 8 hours on low and it looks like this…

Remove the turkey legs from the slow cooker and set on a board to cool so you can shred the meat and get it back into the crock pot.

Next you can use a Hand Blender to blend the soup to your desired consistency. We went all the way in this soup recipe, smooth and creamy. But you can leave it more brothy with textures from the vegetables if you prefer, too.

Turkey Leg Split Pea Soup has tons of shredded smoked turkey in a creamy soup.

Now get the shredded turkey meat back into the soup and stir. Taste for seasonings and either serve of keep warm until you’re ready.

Can You Make This Soup Recipe Ahead Of Time?

Definitely! This soup will stay warm and ready to go in your slow cooker for a few hours, so getting it done in advance is not a problem.

Of course you can make this split pea soup, let it cool and reheat it on the stove or right in the microwave, too. This soup reheats really well which is why we make a lot of it!

Another bonus is that you can also make this ahead of time and freeze it! SO when you need a fast, hearty comforting meal you can pull it right from your freezer and heat it up.

Turkey Leg Split Pea Soup is ready when you come home!

If you have leftover ham instead of turkey, or can’t find a smoked turkey leg at the grocery store, you can use that too! just make the recipe as is, without the turkey added to the slow cooker. Then after you blend the soup at the end you can add the ham right in!

My new favorite split pea soup recipe. Ham is also good. I use turkey or chicken broth instead of water though.
