An Easy Ground Turkey Appetizer Recipe

Meatballs for appetizers, yep, one of my favorite things. They’re a perfect one-bite appetizer that everyone loves. No messing with a fork to cut it, no awkward bites that leave food hangning out of your mouth at a party. Just a toothpick and you’re good to go.

These meatballs also use my favorite whiskey glaze recipe that I’ve used on so many different things, like Whiskey Fried Ribs, or Chicken Wings…you can put this glaze on almost anything and it’s gonna be good.

Just grab all your ingredients and mix them up in a bowl. Make sure after you grate the apple you squeeze the juice out before you add it to the bowl. Easy enough so far.

How to Make These Easy Baked Turkey Meatballs

Now scoop them out on a sheet pan and bake.

While the meatballs are baking you can get the whiskey glaze together, all the ingredients go into a pot, bring to a boil and let reduce for the time that the meatballs cook and your glaze is done.

Toss the meatballs in the whiskey glaze and serve – you could also add them to a slow cooker at this point and just keep them on low until your ready to eat. That’s what we did for Thanksgiving and then took them with us to my sister in law’s house about 25 minutes away. It was a long car ride, I can tell you that.

Ingredients

  • 2 lb. ground turkey
  • 1 medium onion, grated or finely diced
  • 1 cup apple, grated and juices squeezed out
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 2 T. fresh ginger, grated
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • 2/3 cup panko breadcrumbs

For the Whiskey Glaze

  • 6 cloves of garlic, grated with a hand grater or chopped very fine
  • 1 T. canola oil
  • 1/2 c. water
  • 3/4 c. pineapple juice
  • 3/4 c. brown sugar
  • 1/2 c. teriyaki sauce
  • 1/2 c. Crown Royal Whiskey
  • 1/21 t. cayenne pepper (depending on how spicy you like the glaze)
  • 1 1/2 T. cornstarch mixed with 1 1/2 T. of water

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees.
  2. Mix the ingredients for the meatballs in a large bowl until combined.
  3. Using a 1 1/2 T. scoop, portion out the meatballs onto a baking sheet sprayed with cooking spray.
  4. Bake for 15 minutes, until firm and cooked through.
  5. While the meatballs are baking you can start the whiskey glaze by adding all the ingredients to a medium saucepan except for the cornstarch mixture.
  6. Bring the glaze to a boil, then whisk in the cornstarch mixed with water and bring back to a boil again.
  7. Turn the heat down and simmer for 15 minutes until the glaze reduces and thickens.
  8. When the meatballs are done, place in a large bowl and toss with the whiskey glaze.
  9. At this point, you can also put the meatballs tossed with the glaze into a crock pot and set on low or the keep warm setting until ready to eat.
