Why You’ll Love These Watermelon Cosmopolitans

If you love a good cosmopolitan cocktail, then you’re sure to love these Watermelon Cosmopolitans! Fresh watermelon juice is swapped out for cranberry juice for an ultra refreshing drink.

We balanced the other ingredients for this cocktail out a little differently than a traditional cosmo. Watermelon juice is sweeter than cranberry juice (and less tart) so we’re dealing with different flavors here. The ingredient ratios are a little different, but you get the same delicious sweet and tart drink.

For some of us, cosmopolitans never went out of style. We’ve been making these drinks for, I don’t know, like 30 years, so rest assured we’re going to make you a good one!

Ingredients You’ll Need

Just four ingredients go into this cocktail, three of which you should have on hand at all times, in our opinion. Then a quick run to the farm stand or the grocery store to grab some fresh watermelon!

ingredients for making a watermelon cosmopolitan
  • Vodka: We like to use regular vodka, but you can use watermelon vodka if you want to kick up the flavor. Keep in min that flavored vodka is going to make the drink a bit sweeter.
  • Cointreau: Or you can use Triple Sec, we like the flavor of Cointreau better though. It’s less sweet and it has a nicer flavor (in our opinion) but Triple Sec is less expensive.
  • Watermelon Juice: Just add some cubed watermelon to a blender and blend until it’s liquified. Strain through a fine strainer.
  • Lime Juice: Use fresh lime juice, bottled won’t give you as nice of a flavor.

Can You Make The Watermelon Juice Ahead Of Time?

Yes, you can definitely do this part ahead of time. The watermelon juice will separate a little in the refrigerator, just shake it up again before using in your drink.

You can even make this entire cocktail ahead of time, doubled or tripled depending on your needs. Keep it in a pitcher in the refrigerator and then shake with ice right before serving. We love making batch cocktails like this for holidays and parties, it’s one less thing you have to think about doing.

Can You Freeze Watermelon Juice?

Watermelon juice freezes perfectly…so why not freeze some for the winter months when you’re craving this watermelon Cosmopolitan? Of course, we can typically get watermelon all year long these days but it’s the sweetest in the summer months.

Just blend the watermelon until it’s liquified, like in the recipe card here, and put it through a fine strainer. Store in ice cube trays or an air tight container (leave a couple of inches at the top for expansion) for 6-12 months.

Watermelon Cosmopolitan Recipe

  • Author: Dan
  • Prep Time: 5 minutes
  • Cook Time: No Cook
  • Total Time: 0 hours
  • Yield: 2 Drinks 1x

This Watermelon Cosmopolitan is the ultimate summer drink! A twist on the classic drink, this version uses fresh watermelon instead of cranberry juice.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups cubed seedless watermelon (you’ll need 1/2 cup of juice, see note)
  • 5 ounces vodka
  • 1 1/2 ounces Cointreau or Triple Sec
  • 1 ounce fresh lime juice

Instructions

  1. Add the watermelon to a blender. Blend until liquified. Set a fine strainer over a bowl and pour the juice through the strainer, using a spoon to squeeze the juice through.
  2. Measure out 4 ounces (or 1/2 cup) of the watermelon juice and pour it into a cocktail shaker with ice. Add the vodka, Cointreau and lime juice. Shake well and strain into two martini glasses.

Recipe Notes

Depending on the size of your watermelon cubes, you’ll need about 2 cups of watermelon to make 1/2 cup of juice. We typically make more than 1/2 cup and save the juice for cocktails another night.

I had no idea there was such a thing as watermelon vodka, but I will certainly be looking for that. A watermelon cosmo sounds like just the thing for these summer evenings.
