Light and Calm Rum

This Light and Calm Rum is a twist on the famous Dark and Stormy cocktail. A Dark and Stormy has ginger beer, dark rum with fresh lime juice. But this drink is the just opposite.

A Citrus Twist On A Dark & Stormy Cocktail

I started off this cocktail with Captain Morgan’s new grapefruit rum since I was lucky enough to get a few bottles in all three of their new flavors to sample.

And sample I did.

Every flavor reminds me of warmer weather, being on the beach or having drinks on the deck with friends. And it totally reminds me of being in St. Thomas where rum was pretty much everywhere. In St. Thomas you don’t have mimosas with breakfast – you have rum. Lots, and lots of rum…and it doesn’t matter what time it is. It’s always happy hour in the islands.

Having to choose from grapefruit, pineapple and coconut was a tough decision – but eventually I’ll be able get to all three and make some amazing cocktails with all of them.

A pineapple mai tai? Or a fresh pineapple martini?

And the coconut rum, well you could make a million fun summer drinks with that.

One of the important ingredients in this Light and Calm Rum, besides the grapefruit rum of course is using fresh squeezed grapefruit juice. It’s going to taste awesome if you use the bottled stuff but it’ll just be a sweeter drink. So if sweet is what you like, then definitely go with the store bought grapefruit juice.

When I made my Dark & Stormy drink I used a “hard” ginger beer that I love instead of using a traditional ginger beer that’s non-alcoholic. So my Dark & Stormy is boozy – actually it’s all booze except for the squeeze of lime. This Light & Calm is lighter…like I said…because it has actual juice in it. So that means you can have more in my book.

Start with a couple of ounces of Captain Morgan Grapefruit Rum and add it to a glass filled with ice. Stir in your grapefruit juice and squeeze in a couple wedges of lime. Then just top it off with any lemon-lime soda you like. You also could grab a diet version to make this a lower calorie cocktail, or even add seltzer.

I felt the need to rim this glass with a large sugar rim. It’s really the only way to eat grapefruit, right? With lots and lots of sugar.
