What Is A Gold Rush Cocktail?
A Gold Rush Cocktail is a twist on a whiskey sour, swapping out simple syrup for honey. We’re also switching this cocktail up a bit by using rye whiskey instead of regular whiskey for a slightly different flavor profile.
Rye Whiskey, by American standards must be distilled from at 51% rye grain. Rye whiskey is distilled to no higher than 160 proof and is then aged in charred oak barrels. Canadian whiskey like Crown Royal are named “rye” for more historical reasons and don’t need to be distilled with rye grain at all.
Rye whiskey often has a slightly spicy notes, mostly of cloves and black pepper, which is why we think it goes perfectly in this drink. The subtly sweet notes from honey balance the spice of the rye.
How Do You Make A Gold Rush Cocktail?
A few lemons, honey and rye whiskey is all that you’re going to need to make this cocktail recipe.
Juice a fresh lemon (you’ll only need about a teaspoon) and add it to a cocktail shaker with ice. Add a couple of teaspoons of honey and then pour in the rye whiskey.
Shake very well so that the honey dissolves and then pour into a low ball glass with ice. Garnish with a lemon twist and drink.
Can You Use Regular Whiskey Instead Of Rye?
Yes, you can of course use regular whiskey or bourbon instead of rye whiskey. We like the way the spicy rye whiskey plays off the honey, but regular whiskey is more traditional.
