Shake up a Blue Heaven Martini and you’ll feel like you’re on a tropical island! This tasty vodka martini gets its bright color from blue curaçao!
A tropical island will win for my vacation any day. Since we have a couple of kids, Disney does have to get thrown in there every now and then also…but island time is definitely for me.
I don’t know what it is about spring that makes me start wanting to plan a vacation…the warmer weather, things starting to look alive and not gray and dead…and it definitely makes me want to shake up a few cocktails.
Every time I do get to go on an island vacation everyone is always seen drinking all those colorful blue cocktails. These drinks are most often made with blue curaçao and they always seem to call my name.
There’s also lots of daiquiris and margaritas going on, but today it’s about vodka martinis.
Vodka and blue curacao that is…maybe it reminds me of the crazy blue ocean on the islands? Could be – but the flavor is one that can’t be beat. It just tastes tropical. I use it in a lot of my spring and summer cocktails like this Seven Seas martini I posted a while back.
A traditional Blue Heaven martini is usually just blue curaçao and vodka. But to make this martini a little more tropical I also added some Elderflower liquor, it has a floral flavor but not too sweet since we already have that going on with the curaçao. The garnishes can be different too, some with a lemon twist or an orange twist…but I did go traditional and use a big fat maraschino cherry.
Next I grabbed some quality vodka to shake up this martini, you want to make sure you get a nice distilled vodka. Don’t think that just because you’re shaking it up in a mixed drink that you can use the crappy stuff.
Because you can’t.
The key to this Blue Heaven Martini is in the shaking. Shake it like hell so that it’s really, really cold. You want those little pieces of broken off ice going all through this drink.
The next key is to find the biggest maraschino cherries you can find and use them for garnish.
All that’s left to do is sit back and enjoy. This Blue Heaven Martini is going to taste as heavenly as it looks!
