Why You’ll Love This Juicy Turkey Burger Recipe

As far as our turkey burger experience used to go, we’d either order them at restaurants or buy frozen turkey burgers that are already made. That all changed when we decided to make this juicy turkey burger recipe for our family.

  • Control The Ingredients: When you make turkey burgers yourself, you can control the ingredients that go into them. For us, we prefer the 93% or the 97% lean ground turkey. We actually prefer the flavor of leaner ground turkey, so it’s not just for the nutritional information.
  • SO easy To Make: There’s only 5 ingredients in these turkey burgers (minus salt and pepper) and all you need to do is mix them together in a bowl. Form into patties and cook in a skillet. There’s no reason to buy store bought.
  • Meal Prep Friendly: Make a double batch and have a meal at the ready or freeze for another time. These turkey burgers freeze really well so go ahead and make a bunch.
  • Simple But Amazing Flavor: Very simply flavored, but so juicy and tasty. That’s a hard find in a turkey burger if you ask me!

Ingredients You’ll Need

Honestly, I don’t really like the taste of ground turkey with a higher fat content. It’s much gamier tasting since they use some of the dark meat from the turkey, but if you like that you can definitely use that to make these turkey burgers.

  • Ground Turkey: Like we mentioned, use the 93% or 97% lean ground turkey.
  • Salt & Pepper: Kosher salt and fresh ground black pepper.
  • Garlic Powder: For a mild garlic flavor, fresh garlic would have a stronger garlic flavor.
  • Eggs: 2 large eggs, beaten. Helps to bind the ground turkey patties together.
  • Mayonnaise: Adds delicious flavor but also keeps the turkey burgers juicy.
  • Grated Onion: Don’t forget the juice from the grated onion – it adds a wonderful flavor to the ground turkey.

How To Make Turkey Burgers

There’s really only a few steps to getting these homemade turkey burgers on the table. We’ll go over the basics here but for full instructions head down to the recipe card.

ground turkey mixture in a bowl
  • Mix and Chill: Add the ground turkey, grated onion with juice, salt, pepper, garlic powder, beaten eggs and mayonnaise to a large bowl and mix together well. Chill the ground turkey mixture for at least 30 minutes or up to overnight.
  • Form and Cook: Divide the mixture into 6 patties for larger burgers or 8 patties for smaller burgers. We usually make 6 patties because we enjoy the larger size. Add the patties to a skillet lightly sprayed with oil and cook over medium heat for 5 minutes on each side. Cut through the center to make sure that no pink remains. Ground turkey should be cooked to a temperature of 165 degrees.

Tips For Success

  • Wet Your Hands: This turkey mixture will be very wet. You won’t really be able to “form” patties, so we wet our hands and then grab a portion of the ground turkey mixture. Roll it into a ball as best as you can and then plop it right into the hot skillet. Use a spatula to press down gently and from a patty with a flatter shape.
  • Medium to Medium-Low Heat: Use a lower heat to cook these, especially if you’re making the large size burgers. You want to make sure the turkey cooks through the centers without the outside getting too dark.
  • Chill The Mixture: After combining the ingredients, let the mixture chill for at least 30 minutes (longer is better) so that the flavors blend together. Chilling the ground turkey will also make the mixture a little easier to work with.

Reheat and Store

We often make these turkey burgers in large quantities on the weekend so that we have them for dinners and meal prepping during the week. I’ll repeat that this turkey burger recipe has been PERFECTED. So even upon reheating, they’re still going to be juicy and so delicious.

We find that just heating them up in the microwave for a minute or so works just fine. You can also put them back into a skillet and warm them for a few minutes on each side.

To store, place the patties in an air tight container for up to 4 days in the refrigerator. After that it’s best to transfer them to the freezer where you can keep them for as long as 6 months.

Juicy Turkey Burger Recipe

  • Prep Time: 5 minutes

  • Total Time: 15 minutes
  • Yield: 6 Servings 1x

This Juicy Turkey Burger Recipe is so moist and flavorful! These burgers are best cooked in a skillet so you can make them all year long. We’ve got a secret ingredient that makes them taste the best!

Scale

Ingredients

  • 2 pounds ground turkey (93% lean)
  • 2 teaspoons kosher salt
  • 11 1/2 teaspoons ground black pepper, depending on your taste
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons garlic powder
  • 2 tablespoons mayonnaise
  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • 2 heaping tablespoons grated onion with juice

Instructions

  1. Mix all the ingredients together in a large bowl. Refrigerate the mixture for at least 30 minutes or up to overnight.
  2. Spray a large skillet or griddle with non-stick cooking spray over medium to medium-low heat. You can also spray your hands with cooking spray or wet them slightly with water so the turkey mixture won’t stick to your hands when you’re forming the patties. (See note)
  3. Form the turkey mixture into 6 patties. Place the patties onto the hot skillet and cook for 5 minutes on each side, until no longer pink in the center. Transfer the turkey burgers onto a plate covered with foil and repeat with the remaining patties.
  4. Serve with or without buns and with desired condiments and/or toppings.

Recipe Notes

Because the ground turkey mixture will be quite wet, we loosely form a portion into a ball and then place it into the skillet. Then using a spatula, we’ll press down until we get a flatter, round patty.

You can keep the turkey burgers warm in a 300 degree oven on an oven proof plate covered with foil for about 30 minutes or until ready to serve.

If you’re not a mayonnaise fan, you can substitute olive oil, but the mayonnaise adds a lot of flavor to the burgers.
