Tender, Flavorful Pepper Steak Recipe

So what is Pepper Steak? Pepper Steak is a Chinese-American recipe that contains strips of steak and lots of tender bell peppers. It can also have bamboo shoots or other vegetables, serve in a tangy, thick soy and ginger sauce.

We love serving this dish over rice, but you can also just eat it as is and save a few carbs if you’re looking to do that. Ramen noodles would also be delicious, but all you really need is this delicious steak and peppers dish in a big fat bowl.

What Kind Of Meat Do You Need For Pepper Steak?

Pepper Steak is typically made with flank steak, London Broil or sirloin. You can also use top round, or even switch it up with pork tenderloin. We usually make this recipe with flank steak or London Broil and it comes out perfectly every time.

Tips For Making The Best Pepper Steak!

The first key to making this tasty meal is to cut the steak into the right size strips and cook it very quickly. Overcooking the meat will make it tough instead of the super tender strips that we’re looking for.

Successful Pepper Steak should really only require a fork. No knives needed for properly cooked, tender steak strips.

Another tip we have for you is to get all your ingredients together before you start. Make the sauce and have it ready so you’re not overcooking the meat while you try and stir the sauce together. Have all your steak, peppers and onions sliced and ready to go. This steak recipe should be hot and ready on the table in just about 15 minutes.

Last tip for making perfect Pepper Steak is to use quality ingredients. Don’t pick the cheapest cut of meat here, but it certainly doesn’t have to be the most expensive either. Try and buy the prime version of the steak that your buying, it’s only a couple of bucks more and it makes a huge difference.

When you’re making the sauce, use fresh garlic and fresh ginger. The difference in the flavor is really quite noticeable.

Other Variations Of This Steak and Peppers Recipe

Like we mentioned before, you can add other vegetables to this Pepper Steak recipe to boost your veggie intake! Bamboo shoots are a common addition, but you could add broccoli, snow peas, shredded carrots, even asparagus.

Also, even though this recipe is called Pepper Steak, you can make it with strips of chicken, turkey or pork too. The pork, especially pork tenderloin does need to be cut thin and cooked very quickly to prevent it from being tough.

This Pepper Steak recipe is bursting with flavor! Tender steak cooked with peppers and onions in an addicting garlicky, gingery sauce. Serve as is or over rice!

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons olive or canola oil, divided
  • 3 medium bell peppers, assorted colors, sliced into strips
  • 1 large onion, sliced in half and cut into strips
  • 1 1/2 pound flank steak or sirloin steak, sliced into thin strips
  • 1 tablespoon garlic paste or finely minced garlic
  • 1 tablespoon ginger paste
  • 1/2 cup soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon toasted sesame oil
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch

Instructions

  1. Add 1 tablespoon of the oil oil to a large skillet over medium heat. Add the peppers and onions and cook, while stirring for 7-8 minutes until softened. Remove the peppers and onions to a plate.
  2. Season the steak with salt and pepper. Add the remaining oil to the skillet and sear for 2 minutes on each side until browned. Add the peppers and onions back to the pan along with the garlic and ginger.
  3. Mix the soy sauce, brown sugar, sesame oil and cornstarch together in a small bowl.
  4. Pour the sauce into the skillet and stir to combine with the steak and vegetables. Let the sauce simmer for 2-3 minutes until thickened and serve over rice if desired.
